My thoughts of social media LJ1

Hello Professor K. and classmates. This assignment is tricky for me being I have no experience using social for any reason. That said, what I am learning about social media is not incredibly positive. The question “discuss your personal dos and don'ts of social media” should be posed worldwide, not just in this class. Politically alone, the behavior of our politicians is despicable! When a President of the free world uses his platform to insight an insurrection on our nation’s capital should definitely be what you do not use social media for.

I am amazed at is that this President now has access to some of his social media again. My prayer is that what happened on Jan. 6, 2021, will not happen again. This is reckless and dangerous. So, my don't for this question is DO NOT use social media as a weapon to ignite riots.  As for my “social media behavior” is concerned, I would like to think if I continue using social media after this class is over, I will adopt a civilized behavior when posting my thoughts; because that is precisely what it is, my thoughts. I know for sure I would never use social media for bullying or using hate speech. Since this is my first time posting on social media, I am learning about it and posting at the same time.  What I am learning about social media as far as “self-expression” is you can create and build whatever you want to your social media, which I guess, if used in a positive way, is a good thing. I like the freedom to express yourself. Again, positive, responsible freedom. If that is even a thing.

This part of my blog makes me smile. #SELFIES. When I see or hear the word “selfie,” I think of my 5-year granddaughter Isabella who is the apple of my eye. My Isabella is obsessed with good pictures and lighting, so much so that I bought her the new iPhone 14 Pro Max and the “selfie” stick for Christmas to help with her taking that “perfect” picture. As far as “online image,” I am not sure how to answer that. Because I am new to social media, I am unaware of the importance of an “online image.” Hopefully, I will read a few of your blogs and see what that looks like in person. What I do know is that I know how I want to be seen on my blog as a positive influencer. The rules and criteria seem to vary depending on the social media platform, as you clearly see from Twitter allowing the former President to reinstate his social media after his outrageous behavior. Because I am a Man of a certain age, I do not see me comparing myself to anyone. I would imagine though it is a real issue with younger people using social media. I do worry about that with my grandchildren. Especially because they are biracial, and race seems to be the most talked about on social media in a bad way. As of right now depending on my experience in this class will determine whether I continue with social media. I apologize that this post is not that interesting. As we move further in the course, I am sure it will get better.

  1. M, your post is great! You've taken a stand about social media based on the course readings and looking a social media mostly for the 1st time, or as an extension of grandparenting. You've made very good points everyone should consider carefully. Everyone certainly doesn't have to agree with you but they should consider social media from all perspectives in order to make the best decisions for themselves.
