"We Are Data." LJ2

 “We are data.”

The article is difficult for me to understand. I am not sure whether it was about the right to privacy,” or whether you are essential to be relevant for google Uk. What I find interesting about the article is how the “celebrity” back in the day wanted “the right to be forgotten” as it related to their private lives, versus now where social media is being used by the celebrity to remain and stay google relevant. I did google Uk. Test to see whether I was a “celebrity,” and I am happy to report that I am not. There was nothing there which was a relief to me. I will assume that will change since I am now joining different social media platforms.

Personal use:

After reading this chapter, I am a bit nervous about the many electronic fingerprints I am leaving for each google search. I had no idea google used algorithms for tracking data on the person using the service. I have no problem with my continual use of social media after knowing this. It seems harmless enough. Since joining www.blogger.com I have received information about different blogging sites as well as how to build a better blog with a list of offers. It all makes sense now. I always wondered how and why I would receive advertisements for assorted products and services after online shopping.

Professional use:

Professionally I see no problem. By being in this class, I can build a professional platform using social media. I will be cognizant of what I put out on the internet, as well as the different sites I use. While I am a little uncomfortable knowing that I am digitally tracked, I cannot see where ethics is an issue when using social media. Even if you look at it as being intrusive or some sort of violation, it is a choice when using the internet. That is a risk you as a person must decide whether the juice is worth the squeeze. It may be due to my naivete and lack of experience with social media, but I need help seeing the problem at this point.

  1. Hi Michael!

I enjoyed reading your response to the "We Are Data" reading. It was easy to follow through and I noticed that this blog acts like your brain system. I do have to say that reading the assigned reading from the book made it hard for me to full grasp the concepts. I like how you mentioned how this class can help you with professionalism on social media. I came into this class without thinking about the professional aspect, but I believe we will learn som techniques that we can use in the future.

  2. Hello Michael
After reading your discussion about "We Are Data" I found it very interesting about the output you have stated in your discussion and was very intrigued about it as well, such as in the beginning where you decided to do a search on yourself by doing google UK which I never knew you could do and found it very interesting how you went an extra step in doing research to get a better understanding of the reading.

  3. Hi Michael!

The article does use a bit of uncommon language, but it seems you have the right idea. The article was mainly their to stress the importance to make sure you know what you are providing to these companies and possible negatives. You seem to understand that so please do not think you missed the point!

  4. Hello Michael, I enjoyed reading your response as well. I like the point you elaborated on in regards to celebrities wanting to be private instead of wanting to remain relevant now. I also like the fact that you brought up about receiving advertisements and etc for things that you might have searched for online. I agree with your statement when it comes to professional use as well, you just have to be aware of what you're putting out for everyone to potentially see.
